  The machining quality of the graphite plate influences its service life directly.It must be processed carefully to reach the standard indicators. it must be uniform such as dipping, the resistivity must be consistent, it also can avoid a part is intact and another part is serious corrosion in the production process so that the total body waste down.

  It is the key to make a good use environment to prolong the service life of graphite anode plate. In the production process, reduce the impact, keep the working environment clean, detect the circuit on time and organizing the production at a fixed temperature, reduce the degree of oxidation of the air.

  The Matters needing attention for prolonging the service life of graphite plate:

  The larger the amount of current is, the higher the surface temperature of the graphite plate. Minimum load density (power) is recommended.

  The graphite plate should be in parallel as far as possible. the resistance of the graphite plate is high when the resistor is connected in series If the resistance value of the graphite plate is different,and it will leads to the rapid increase of the resistance of a graphite plate and the short life

  The appearance of the graphite plate will form a dense silicon oxide film after it is heated in the air, it’s a anti-oxidation maintenance film and play a life extending effect. In recent years, various kinds of coatings have been developed to avoid the cracking of graphite plates.

  The shorter of the service lift of graphite plate , the higher the use temperature , so when the furnace temperature over 1400℃, the oxidation rate accelerated ,the life shorten , we shouldn’t let the graphite plate surface temperature is too high when we use it.

  Graphite is charactered by good conductivity, good heat conduction and rust-resistance, but graphite contains many pores during their manufacturing process inevitably. H2 and O2 will be mixed if the graphite bipolar plates which contain pores are used in PEMFC ( proton exchange membrane fuel cell) , and the performance of fuel cell is low . Graphite bipolar plates were impregnated by thick Na2SiO3 solution in vacuum and pressure. Na2SiO3 in graphite plate was turned into SiO2 after being reacted with acid and heated. Porosity of graphite plate dropped to 3. 3 %from 18. 2%.No H2 leakage occurred at the pressure of 0 . 3 MPa.The resistance of graphite plate after impregnation did not rise. The voltage of fuel cell used the graphite plates added 40 mV at the same current density.

  Graphite plates are widely used as bipolar plates for proton exchange membrane fuel cells because of their good electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance. But as a result of the graphite plate in the process of burning coal tar as the binder will be oxidized or volatile, are caused by the size of the holes graphite products, the porosity is about 18.2% ~ 24.3%, such a high rate of stomata use graphite plate. At present, more and more researchers in the world are using organic materials such as phenol resin, paraffin, asphalt, and so on to fill the hole of graphite plate, which can reduce the porosity and achieve the purpose of sealing graphite plate. The advantages of organic matter are large molecular weight, long molecular chain and good deformation performance. However, due to the organic matter seems to penetrate into the graphite plate hole, and even penetrate into the graphite layer, forming a composite material, thus increasing the graphite plate body resistance and surface resistance. The theory of voltage of single proton exchange membrane fuel cell is only 1.229 V, the greater the material resistance of the battery, the output power is small, therefore, most of the organic material is not suitable for the impregnation of proton exchange membrane fuel cell with graphite bipolar plate.

Application of graphite plate

  The graphite plates are in the shape of plates , according to the use requirements and exact use situation , it can be divided by the raw material , vibracation graphite plates , molded graphite plate and isostatic graphite plates , with different use life and prices , the application of the graphite plates as below:

  1) refractory materials: in the smelting industry, with graphite manufacturing graphite crucible, ingot protective agent, smelting furnace lining magnesia carbon brick.

  2) a conductive material: in the electrical equipment industry, the widespread adoption of graphite electrode, carbon brush, flashlight, carbon nanotubes and TV picture tube coating.

  3) wear resistant materials and lubricants: in many mechanical equipment, using graphite as wear-resistant and lubricating materials, can be in the -200 ~ 2000 degrees Celsius temperature range of 100m/s sliding, no or less with lubricating oil.

Graphite/resin composite bipolar plate

  Graphite/resin composite bipolar plate has aroused wide public concern due to its good moldability, high flexural strength and electrical conductivity, good corrosion resistance. In this paper, carbon nanofibers's high strength,high electrical and thermal conductivity as well as excellent surface size effect was utilized to enhance the performance of graphite / resin composite bipolar plates.

  Expanded graphite is widely used as the conductive filler, polyimide and benzoxazine as binder. The mixing method of expanded graphite and resin with large density difference was studied and the effect of resin content, molding temperature and pressure, holding time were also investigated. Using artificial graphite as the conductive filler and the above two kinds of resin as the binder, the paper investigated the effect of resin content, molding pressure and holding time on the properties of composite bipolar plate. The experiment focused on flexural strength, through-plane conductivity, in-plane conductivity and corrosion rate of the composite bipolar plate.

  The catalyst was prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. Carbon nanofibers/graphite composite material was synthesized by the method of catalytic chemical vapor deposition through in-situ growth of carbon nanofibers on the surface of expanded graphite and artificial graphite. After mixing the composite material with the resin, the composite was shaped by thermal molding technique. The effect of carbon nanofibers under different catalyst loading and growth time of carbon nanofibers on the performance of the composite bipolar plate were studied. The results showed that appropriate amount of carbon nanofibers on the surface of expanded graphite could enhance the through-plane conductivity, however,the in-plane conductivity decreased significantly and flexural strength changed slightly. Artificial graphite/resin composite bipolar plate has high performance in many aspects, but the performance declined after carbon nanofibers were grew on the surface of artificial graphite.

       The graphite material plate has a good electrical conductivity,thermal conductivity,and corrosion resistance,so it’s widely used as the bipolar plate of full cell. However,there are some small hole,during the production process,and the size of the holes are different. The main reason is that some coal tar which is used as binder will be oxidation or volatilization during the making process. And this situation will have a bad influence on the graphite plate The porosity of graphite plate is about 18.2%~24.4%.

  Now,the most common method is using some organic compound to fill in the hole of graphite plate,such as phenolic resin, paraffin, asphalt, polymer, etc. to achieve the purpose of sealing,but it can increase the resistance of graphite plate. The new way to meet the requirement is to use the

  Na2SiO3 solution, acid leaching and heating to treat the graphite plate,it can improve the fuel cell performance and reduce the porosity.

  The immersion time and pressure have a big influence to the result. the effect will be better with the pressure increasing and the time extending. However ,the higher pressure need higher strength and better sealing effect,and also difficult to operate.

  By this way,the porosity can down to 3.3% from 18.2%,and it will not influence the resistance. Some scholars did the testing on the different resistance between the before and after dipping,it’s about 6.34ρ /( Ψ ·cm) before impregnation and it’s about 6.36ρ /( Ψ ·cm) after the impregnation.

  The properties of the graphite plate after impregnation is better than the ones before impregnation,and it also can be proved by the electric reactor performance test.

  The graphite plate after impregnation can increase the voltage to 40mV above,it’s under the same situation with the same current density to the graphite plate without impregnation,it can guarantee the fuel cell property.

The use of graphite plates

  Graphite plates with different dimensions are machinined from the raw material of the graphite blocks , we can make the machining according to the requirements and use situation of the customers , and it can be dicided into three kinds with the different kind of material . isostagic graphite plates , moulded graphite plates and vibracation graphite plates . Graphite blocks have good resistance to thermal shock, oxidation and corrosion, and have suitable resistivity and homogenous structure. They have been used extensively in industries like solar, foundry, chemicals, electronics, ferrous metals, high-temp, processing, ceramics and refractory.

  Graphite plates,It can be used to put as lining of metal tundish. The tundish function is to take the liquid steel slag and directing it to a nozzle for atomizing purpose. Our graphite plates can resist much higher temperature of over 2500 Centigrade,it can instead of cutting the plates from graphite electrodes.

  3) Graphite sheets made through the advanced chemical treatment and mechanical procedure without fibers ,binders, crack or other additives . it is excellent temperature resisting lubricating , electricity conductive as well as fireproof material for industrial application . and it offers excellent sealing capabilities under extreme conditions with a longer life and less maintenance.

  Graphite sheet disperse rate is over 50. as a result it can shorten the smelting time and reduce the production cost .
